When we think about the language of cultural competence and lived experience, we wanted to include these terms because we believe they complement the competency. Being conscious of our culture capital and lived experience allows us to connect “real-world” issues to our identity.

Cultural capital is the accumulation of knowledge, behaviors, and skills that a person can tap into to demonstrate one’s cultural competence and social status.

In qualitative phenomenological research, lived experience refers to a representation of the experiences and choices of a given person, and the knowledge that they gain from these experiences and choices.
