Question 1 of 5
1. Question
#4
What was your interpretation of the incident?
- DescriptionWhat the question is intending for you to answer:Why do you think the micro-aggression occurred? What was its significance? What was the intention of the aggressor?
- ExampleExample:I believe Mrs. Zimmerman was not equipped to handle my reaction to the scene because as a middle class white woman, she NEVER had to think about the pain of slavery nor did she want to; hence, her reaction to my grief. She didn’t have the cultural competence necessary to teach students let alone black students.

Question 2 of 5
2. Question
#5
What were the consequences of your incident?
- DescriptionWhat the question is intending for you to answer:What effects did the micro-aggression have on you? How did it affect your behavior patterns, coping mechanisms, and overall well-being?
- ExampleExample:As I processed the situation more I recognized that my teacher and all the other students in my class were white. I felt as though my pain was invisible to them. No one asked me if I was okay. Not my teacher. Not the white students I called “friends.” Not even my white basketball teammates whose homes I had slept in. From that day forward I saw myself as the safe and token black student whose intellect, humor, and basketball skills were all they saw.

Question 3 of 5
3. Question
#2
What was your perception of the incident?
- DescriptionWhat the question is intending for you to answer:What was your belief about whether the incident was discriminatorily motivated.
- ExampleExample:I thought she was being a nice teacher by not writing me up for leaving the class without permission as she later mentioned, as a consequence I could have received for my behavior. I didn’t think she was overtly racist just cold and heartless at that moment. At the same time, I didn’t think that she cared about black people.

Question 4 of 5
4. Question
#1
What was the incident?
- DescriptionWhat the question is intending for you to answer:A verbal, behavioral, or environmental situation that had potential discriminatory undertones.
- ExampleExample:When I was in the 8th grade my social studies teacher, Mrs. Zimmerman, had the class watch part of the Alex Haley’s Roots tv series. I remember becoming emotional and leaving during the scene where Kunta Kinte was being whipped for not saying his name was Toby. My white teacher came into the hall and asked me why was I crying? I stated that the scene was very hard for me to watch. She replied, “I guess that makes sense. Just come back in when you are ready.”

Question 5 of 5
5. Question
#3
What was your reaction to the incident?
- DescriptionWhat the question is intending for you to answer:What was your immediate response to the incident? What cognitive, behavioral or emotional reactions did you experience?
- ExampleExample:My immediate response was to question if I over reacted by leaving the classroom. Simultaneously I did not feel safe or com- fortable in her class. I felt like my pain was of no interest to her. I felt as though she did not see me as a black student, but rather slavery was just another part of the curriculum instead of it being the real history of my ancestors.
